ACTION:

Independent investigation into #TrumpRussia

Urge your members of Congress to publicly demand an independent investigation of Russian interference in our election and the Trump campaign’s ties to Moscow. At the House Intelligence Committee hearing Monday, FBI Director James Comey confirmed that the FBI has an on-going investigation into the Trump campaign’s coordination with Russian officials, which it started last July. Comey and NSA Director, Admiral Michael Rogers also debunked Trump’s tweeted claims that former President Obama wiretapped him. Republicans on the Committee showed little interest in investigating the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russian officials and focused almost solely on demanding vigorous investigation and prosecution of those who may have leaked information about the on-going investigation. Representative Devin Nunes [R-CA], Chairman of the House Intel Committee, and Senator Richard Burr [R-NC], were both on the Trump transition team and, at the White House’s request, agreed to knock down investigation rumors to journalists. However, given Republicans lack of enthusiasm for investigating Trump’s campaign, it’s time to demand an independent investigation so the American people can have confidence in the results. If you missed the hearing, Ranking Member Adam Schiff’s [D-CA] opening statement is a superb 15 minute survey of the circumstantial evidence supporting Trump campaign collusion with Russia.

Why Call?

Attorney General Jeff Sessions meetings with the Russian ambassador (communications he lied about when asked about them under oath). The FBI has confirmed investigations of the Trump team’s ties to Russia and contacts between Russians and Paul Manafort, Roger Stone, and Carter Page are attracting scrutiny. We can’t let scandal, dishonesty, and partisan politics get in the way of the facts. Ask your legislators to demand an independent, bipartisan commission led by a special prosecutor to investigate Trump’s ties to Russia and Russian interference in the election and presidential transition.

What to Say

Hi, I’m [NAME], a constituent. I’m extremely concerned about the extent of Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and Presidential transition.

Considering Flynn’s resignation, the Sessions scandal and continuing FBI investigation of campaing associates Paul Manafort, Roger Stone, and Carter Page, we need more than Congressional committee investigations to get to the bottom of this matter. I’m calling to urge [Senator/Representative NAME] to publicly and legislatively support the creation of an independent, bipartisan commission.

Given Attorney General Sessions’ communications with the Russian ambassador, this commission should be led by a special prosecutor. I don’t want partisan politics or the Trump Administration’s influence to bias the investigation, so I think it should be modeled after the 9/11 commission, which was more open to the public than a committee investigation. Please ask [Senator/Representative NAME] to follow up with me.

Thank you!

SUPPORT S.2849/H.R.5820, the Detention Oversight, Not Expansion Act (DONE Act)

IMPROVE OVERSIGHT OF IMMIGRATION DETENTION FACILITIES; STOP EXPANSION OF FACILITIES

Call your MOC's and tell them to SUPPORT S.2849/H.R.5820, the Dentention Oversight, Not Expansion Act (the DONE Act)

U.S. Senator Merkley was threatened with arrest when he tried to inspect conditions at a Brownsville, TX privately-run child-detention center, which raises serious questions about what they are trying to conceal from Congress and the public. S.2849/H.R.5820, the Detention Oversight, Not Expansion Act (DONE Act) halts expansion of detention facilities in favor less costly and more humane community-based alternatives. It also requires unannounced independent inspections and audits to ensure compliance with federal laws.

Stop Separating IMMIGRANT Families

Call Sen. Rubio and tell him to SUPPORT S. 3036, the Keep Families Together Act

Horrendous stories have emerged that describe children ripped out of their parents arms at the border and disturbing depictions of the living conditions at detention facilities holding these children now labeled "Unaccompanied Minors." Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) described a facility in Texas holding hundreds of young migrants as a "series of cages that look a lot like dog kennels." Border patrol agents have told parents that their children were being taken to get baths, only for the children to never return. A child was even ripped away from a mother while breastfeeding; the mother was subsequently handcuffed for resisting.

Request #TrumpTaxes

Urge members of Congress to demand President Trump’s tax returns, whether by subpoena, resolution, legislation or otherwise. Democrats and a growing number of Republicans in the House and Senate have supported a variety of different initiatives to obtain Trump’s tax returns which Trump, unlike any president in 50 years, has refused to release.
